MY TMJ STORY PART 1

Hi everyone, this post is quite different and not related to fashion or makeup. But I think some of you might need to know this. It might help you in any way someday. Well I hope.

HEADACHES
I've been having headaches everyday for almost a year now and I wasn't really sure what caused it. It is usually during 2pm onwards. At first I thought it was from stress.
I even asked several doctors about it and they always see it as migraine and stress from work. I took medicine and such to relieve my headache. I also thought it was caused by my pills that was medicated to me by my Ob-gyn for polycystic ovary syndrome as she warned me that it may trigger migraines.

CLICKING JAW
Then last April I noticed a clicking sound on my jaw whenever I open my mouth. It wasn't painful at that time. But when the month of May started, I noticed that I can't open my mouth normally. I can't even yawn. I can't eat a piece of my favorite California maki without slicing it in half. I always have this excruciating pain near my ear. I can't eat properly. I started to think it was caused by my wisdom tooth on the left side of my mouth. It was slightly slanted and not aligned to my teeth. But after my check up with my dentist, she referred me to a TMJ specialist.

WISDOM TOOTH
After a week, I went to the TMJ specialist for consultation and check up. She took pictures and gave me lectures on what TMJ really mean and why I'm having it. I explained to her that my last dentist didn't remove any of my wisdom tooth before putting my braces on. Then after a year without braces, my wisdom tooth started to show one by one. My teeth started to move. It was slightly going back to it's original state before my braces.

MINOR SURGERY
Then my TMJ specialist told me that it's not right to put braces on without removing the wisdom tooth. Because she said it will eventually ruin what the braces already fixed. That I should go under a minor surgery to remove it especially if it's not showing yet. It is very essential, she said. That cleared everything. My 2 1/2 years with braces was a total waste of time, effort and money.

X-RAY
I was told to get a tmj x-ray so she can study my case clearly.

TREATMENT
Splint is the first step of tmj treatment and it will cost P20,000 and will take 6-8 months of curing. This will only lessen the pain but will not fixing the bite.

BRACES
The next step to treating the tmj is to wear braces again. Correcting the bite to eventually fix the jaw. Which will cost P40,000 - P60,000 and will take 2-5 years.

EXERCISE
I've watched a tutorial on Youtube showing how can I lessen the headache and pain on my jaw. Haven't tried it yet.

I'm still not sure what to do next. I'm currently researching on the internet about TMJ and what can I do about it. I didn't like splints. I'm okay with braces, but splints doesn't look comfortable for me. I will make sure to update you guys about my tmj status. Thank you for reading. And please let me know if you've experienced this or you know someone who had tmj before.

  1. Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I don't understand why that dentist knowingly put braces on you without removing your wisdom teeth first. Tens of thousands of pesos down the drain!

  2. I have TMJ!

However, I don't think it's as serious as your case because I don't get headaches? It started back in high school and I just woke up with a really sore jaw. I didn't think much of it and the pain eventually went away. I then realized after sometimes, I could no longer open my jaw all the way without some discomfort and it always clicked a little.

Other times, like when I'm taking a big bite of whatever I'm eating, my jaw will 'dislocate' temporarily and I'm not able to close my mouth again. I have to kind of move it around a little until it 'pops' back into place.

I went to a doctor to eventually ask what it was and he confirmed it was TMJ and referred me to a dental surgeon. I have yet to visit the surgeon so I'm not even sure if I need surgery yet. I really hope I don't! What worries me though is that I THINK, I don't recall, the first doctor said it might get worse as I grow older if I don't do something about it...

I used to wear braces as a kid, but I was terrible at wearing my retainers regularly so my bottom row of teeth became crooked again. I didn't really care too much when that happened because I have an overbite anyway and when I smile you don't even see my bottom row of teeth. I am considering getting braces there again, but I still don't know because it's really expensive...
